About Us
The Nursing History Nova Scotia Society (NHNSS) was suggested at a Victoria General hospital School of Nursing Alumni regular meeting in 2007, held in the ballroom of the Bethune building. This building was opened in 1952 specifically as a nurse’s residence.
Nursing History NS Society was formed by nine interested nurses from various nursing schools in 2009 and led by Gloria Stephens. The Society has met continuously and has grown in membership, with nurses of various backgrounds, experiences and life stories. Also, the Society has the privilege of having other than nurses as members who bring to it a broader prospective for following the history of health care in Nova Scotia. The Society has completed considerable accomplishments relating to the NS nursing profession, by following its mandate.
The mandate as quoted from the Constitution: "Nursing History Nova Scotia Society is committed to locate and record the history of Nova Scotia’s nursing profession, some of which was the first in Canada; provide profiles of the Registered Nurses as members, preserving their legacy; inspire present and future generations in the preservation of nursing history; network with nurses of professional organizations and honour Nova Scotia Registered Nurses who made a significant contribution to patient care and the profession".
